A Family Reunited

In August 2023, Getasew came to our office with one hope on his heart: to bring his oldest son, Berket, safely to the United States. His wife and younger children had already joined him, but Berket—who had been raised by grandparents in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region after losing his mother as a toddler—was still waiting.

Soon after we filed the petition, the situation in Berket’s village grew dangerous. Violence between government forces and FANO fighters was intensifying, and as a teenager, Berket was especially at risk. We worked quickly to expedite his case, eventually gaining approval with the help of Senator James Lankford’s office. Still, progress was slow, and months of waiting followed. During that time, communication with Berket was often cut off as the fighting spread.

This spring, the long-awaited interview was finally scheduled. After completing a required DNA test, Berket received approval and arrived safely in the U.S. this July. He is now enrolled in 10th grade at Jenks High School and is adjusting well after missing over a year of school due to the war.

When asked what he appreciates most about being here, Berket shared: *the quiet.* No more gunfire. No more fear of being taken to fight.

We are deeply grateful to God for protecting Berket and making this reunion possible. Stay tuned for an upcoming interview with Getasew and Berket, where they will share more about their journey.
